SHORT HISTORY OF THE WEDDING DRESS

Today we think about wedding dresses and immediately white gowns pop into our minds.
Decorated A-lines, spreading ball gowns, mermaid skirts, open necklines and open backs with illusion V-neck cuts…

But…this was not always the case. The wedding dress has a rich history and differs from culture to culture. The evolution of the wedding dress is one interesting topic and we thought we share our view on it.

Well, before the 19th-century women used to wear anything but white dress for the big day. Obviously, they would select their best dress and outfit for the ceremony but white was not trendy among brides.

Can you imagine a green wedding dress? Even today if you go for a non-white gown you are considered a hippie. Take a look at these picture below which depicts the Italian merchant Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife. (Painted by Jan van Eyck).

All in all, the contemporary market is dominated by white sleeveless and strapless dresses. These are easier to adapt and alternate to the bride’s requirements.
Although, celebrities and A-list actresses try to break the pattern opt for more extreme colors the trend continues.
